Their origin can be traced to the livestock that farmers tended to in this area a century ago, before it became protected land. The ponies are a managed herd, but they are left to roam wild. WebAbout 150 ponies roam the area today, foraging at higher altitudes mainly in summer and descending as cold weather sets in.
